Faded War: Weathered Bounaries
of Post-Camptown in Korea

휴전이 선언되자 농사 짓던 마을 한복판에 군부대의 담장이 세워졌다. 캠프 하우즈 후문 초소는 대기와 검문 통과의 시간이 골목의 숨결과 맞닿는 자리였다. 사람들은 그 앞에서 걸음을 늦추고, 경계를 느꼈다. 오늘도 그 자리는 마을의 속도와 경계의 규칙이 부딪히는 교차점으로 남아 있다. 초소는 어느 날 그어진 국경의 입구가 아니라, 매일의 통행에서 서서히 녹아든 관습의 경계가 되었다.

The border arrived before it was named. In front of the back gate guard post of Camp Howze, hours of waiting, checking, and passing met the breath of the alley. Steps slowed, and eyes traced an invisible line. Even today the site remains a crossing where the pace of the town meets the rules of the border. The guard post was not a border drawn in a day, but one slowly learned through everyday gestures.

군 기지 울타리를 넘어온 자재와 기술로 교회를 지었고, 그 주변에서는 식당과 가게 시장과 유흥이 뒤섞인 일상이 가득해졌다. 교회는 신앙의 공간이면서 동시에 미군의 생활을 지탱하던 다양한 서비스 산업의 이웃이었고, 서로 다른 욕망들이 한 거리를 공유했다. 이곳에서 돌봄은 생계였고, 공존은 생활의 조건이었다.

Materials and skills that crossed the border became a sanctuary, while around it grew an everyday world where meals, repairs, markets, and entertainment coexisted. The church was both a place of faith and a room neighboring the service economy that sustained the lives of soldiers, with different needs sharing the same street. Here, care was livelihood before it was virtue, and coexistence a condition of living rather than a declaration.

연풍리 용주골은 한때 화려한 유흥의 거리였다. 복잡한 냉전 외교의 그림자 속에서 이러한 유흥은 비공식적으로 장려되었고, 군이 떠난 뒤에도 이 거리는 현대 도시의 이면을 오래 떠맡았다. 이곳은 불편한 역사이자 동시에 불가피한 삶의 환경이었으며, 오늘 우리는 그 현실을 다시 배우는 중이다.

Yongjugol in Yeonpung-ri was once a vibrant street of leisure and entertainment. Informally encouraged in the shadow of Cold War diplomacy, the district continued to bear the hidden side of the modern city after the military left. The place has been both an uncomfortable history and an inescapable living environment, and today we are learning to confront that reality anew.
